Craig Guildford investigated for misconduct over Israeli fan ban
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into former West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford for potential gross misconduct. The probe centers on the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from attending a Europa League match against Aston Villa at Villa Park in November.
Investigators allege that an intelligence briefing used to justify the ban contained inaccurate, misleading, and imbalanced information regarding the risks posed by Israeli fans. Evidence suggests Guildford may have had oversight of this document. Additionally, a police staff member is accused of using AI to source inaccurate information, and a senior officer is being investigated for failing to verify the briefing's accuracy.
Two other senior officers are also under investigation for their roles in match planning, including whether they properly balanced operational concerns with engagement with local Jewish communities. The IOPC has reviewed over 600 pieces of evidence, including operational documents, meeting minutes, and witness statements.
