Craig Melvin shares news of mother completing cancer treatment

Today Show anchor Craig Melvin became emotional during a live broadcast on Monday, August 17, after sharing that his mother, Betty Jo Melvin, has completed her breast cancer treatments.

While co-host Jenna Bush Hager was presenting a segment featuring a grandmother finishing chemotherapy, Melvin revealed that his mother ‘rang the bell’ today to signify the end of her own treatment. Betty Jo Melvin was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2025 following a routine mammogram.

Melvin noted the emotional weight of the news, as his family has previously faced significant losses to cancer, including his brother Lawrence Meadows, who died of colon cancer in 2020, and a granddaughter. Melvin has been an advocate for cancer awareness following these family tragedies.
