Craig Turner develops mechanical whip-cracking launcher
Craig Turner, the Australian maker behind Turnah81, has developed a mechanical launcher designed to reliably produce the sonic boom associated with whip-cracking. While traditional bullwhips require significant skill and practiced timing to break the sound barrier, this device uses a spring-loaded trigger and elastic shock cord to achieve the effect on demand.
The construction of the whip itself involves a complex tapering process. By joining increasingly thin and light segments of polyester nylon and Dyneema, the device utilizes the conservation of momentum; as the mass declines toward the tip, the velocity increases, allowing the end of the lash to accelerate past the speed of sound.
Testing indicates the launcher is highly effective, capable of slicing leaves, tearing aluminum cans, and hitting small targets with precision. Turner noted that the consistency of the device could facilitate further scientific study of the cracking effect using schlieren imaging setups.
