Craig Wright Bitcoin movie sparks controversy over Satoshi identity

A $70 million film directed by Doug Liman, currently in post-production, is centering on Craig Wright’s version of the Satoshi Nakamoto story. The production features Casey Affleck as Wright, alongside a cast including Gal Gadot, Pete Davidson, and Isla Fisher. To reduce costs, producer Ryan Kavanaugh utilized artificial intelligence to generate sets and environments while actors performed on bare stages.

The film has reignited debates regarding Wright’s claim to be the creator of Bitcoin. This follows a 2024 ruling by the High Court of England and Wales, where Mr. Justice Mellor determined that Wright did not write the Bitcoin white paper or create the network. The judge stated that Wright “lied to the Court extensively and repeatedly” and found evidence of large-scale forgery.

In December 2024, Wright received a suspended 12-month sentence for contempt of court following a £900 billion claim against Bitcoin developers. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès has challenged the film’s narrative by directing viewers to a website that utilizes public court judgments to dispute Wright’s account.
