Craig Wright Calls for Unchanging Bitcoin Protocol

Australian computer scientist Craig Wright, who claims to be Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, has renewed his criticism of Bitcoin's governance. In a series of posts on X, Wright argued that the cryptocurrency's base protocol should remain permanently immutable, warning that developer‑led upgrades give too much power to a small group and undermine decentralisation. He said fixed rules create a level playing field for businesses, allowing innovation to occur at the application layer rather than by altering the core protocol. Wright also accused current Bitcoin supporters of fostering a centralized governance model and lamented the shift from Bitcoin's original "electronic cash" vision to a "digital gold" store of value narrative.

Despite his outspoken stance, Wright's credibility remains contested. In 2024 the UK High Court ruled he is not Satoshi Nakamoto, and he later received a suspended prison sentence for contempt of court after breaching related orders. The debate over protocol immutability and governance continues to shape discussions within the cryptocurrency community.
