Brickell construction rig collapse injures four in Miami
A construction piling rig collapsed in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood on Monday morning, injuring four people and causing a vehicle fire. The incident occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive.
The collapse struck three vehicles, including two parked cars and one in motion. A female driver managed to reverse her vehicle and escape through the rear just as the machinery landed on the hood and ignited a fire. Additionally, the rig fell onto a metal storage container, trapping two construction workers inside.
Miami Fire Rescue utilized the ‘Jaws of Life’ to extricate the two workers from the crushed container. All four injured individuals—the driver and three construction workers, including the rig operator—were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collapse, which could involve mechanical failure or other factors. The incident has raised safety concerns among local residents, following a separate crane-related incident in the same neighborhood in August.
