Crane populations show varying trends in Germany

A young crane, nicknamed “Krani,” has been released into the wild after recovering from injuries at a wildlife station in Paterzell. The bird was originally rescued by firefighters near Walchensee after becoming stuck in a tree, causing it to lose contact with its migratory flock. Following treatment for bruises and abrasions, the crane has successfully flown southwest toward its migratory destination.

In contrast, conservationists in the Oberes Rhinluch nature reserve near Berlin have reported a significant decline in crane sightings. Monitoring stations recorded 13,630 birds on October 13, a sharp decrease compared to 33,590 during the same period last year and 72,400 in 2024. Experts are investigating potential causes for the lower numbers, including avian flu, food shortages, or the impact of recent heatwaves and drought.
