Cranes migrate through Germany in large numbers
Large flocks of cranes are currently migrating through Germany, with approximately 30,000 birds resting at a reservoir in the Northeim district. The birds are traveling along established migratory routes toward wintering grounds in Southern Europe, such as Andalusia, or further to North Africa.
In the Heidekreis region, cranes are also being observed passing through the Lichtenmoor near Steimbke. To allow the public to observe the birds as they return to their sleeping sites at dusk, the nature conservation organization NABU is hosting a free guided excursion on October 25.
These migratory birds often feed on harvested corn and grain fields to build energy reserves before continuing their journey. The species is noted for its distinctive trumpeting calls and large wingspan, which can reach up to 245 centimeters.
