Cranger Kirmes in Herne launches amid heightened security and rail disruptions

The 542nd edition of the Cranger Kirmes, the largest folk festival in North Rhine‑Westphalia, opened on 6 August 2026 in Herne. Organisers expect around four million visitors over eleven days, featuring rides, music, parties and a large parade with more than 50 marching groups and 110 themed floats. Security measures have been intensified after a recent attack in Berlin, with the site protected by 470 truck barriers and officials stating the event is among the most secured in Germany. The opening ceremony on Friday afternoon includes a traditional barrel‑tapping attended by Mayor Frank Dudda (SPD) and North‑Rhine‑Westphalia Health Minister Karl‑Josef Laumann (CDU). Due to dry conditions and forest‑fire risk, officials will decide shortly whether to cancel the customary fireworks displays.

At the same time, Deutsche Bahn has imposed a full two‑week closure of the railway line between Herne‑Wanne‑Eickel and Recklinghausen Süd for bridge works, starting 8 August. The blockage will cause numerous train cancellations and reroutes, prompting the city to advise visitors to use the park‑and‑ride facility at Cranger Kirmes Baukau and take shuttle buses running every ten minutes to the fairgrounds.
