Crans-Montana fire investigation expands to 17 suspects

The criminal investigation into the fatal New Year's Eve fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has expanded to include 17 suspects. The latest individual implicated is Rose-Marie Clavien, a former municipal councillor in charge of construction from 2017 to 2024.

The investigation follows a tragedy that resulted in 41 deaths and 115 injuries. Among the 17 people facing criminal proceedings are eight current or former elected officials and seven municipal employees or former employees. Authorities noted that officials admitted a lack of safety and fire inspections at the bar since 2019.

Key suspects include French co-owners Jacques and Jessica Moretti, who are scheduled for confrontation hearings this autumn. Jacques Moretti was reportedly held in provisional detention following allegations of violence against his wife in the Valais canton.

Preliminary findings suggest the fire was ignited by sparks from fountain candles, which ignited soundproofing foam on the basement ceiling during New Year's Eve celebrations. The victims were primarily adolescents and young adults, including many foreign nationals, specifically from Italy and France. All accused face charges of negligent homicide.
