Jacques Moretti interrogated in Crans-Montana fire investigation

Jacques Moretti, co-owner of the bar Le Constellation, underwent interrogation in Sion regarding the fatal fire in Crans-Montana that killed 41 people and injured 115 others on New Year's Day 2026. The hearing, originally intended as a direct confrontation between Jacques and his wife Jessica Moretti, was modified after prosecutors decided to postpone Jessica's appearance due to her reported severe psychological fragility.

Jacques Moretti has been in preventive detention since mid-August on suspicion of domestic violence against his wife. During the proceedings, he reportedly admitted to narrowing a staircase in the establishment. The investigation has expanded to include 17 individuals, including eight current or former politicians from Crans-Montana and Chermignon, and seven municipal employees or former employees. The primary charges involve negligent homicide, negligent bodily injury, and negligent arson.

Separately, legal representatives for the victims have requested that the municipality of Crans-Montana be placed under partial guardianship. This request follows concerns regarding the town's ability to manage the potential financial consequences of the tragedy, which experts suggest could reach hundreds of millions of francs. Meanwhile, families of the deceased are protesting the municipality's plan to remove photographs of the victims from the building facade to be replaced by a wooden structure with names and stars.
