Córdoba City Council approves plan to increase social housing to 50%

The Córdoba City Council has approved a new housing plan proposed by the Partido Popular (PP), which significantly increases the requirement for protected social housing (VPO) in new developments. Under the new framework, VPO housing will account for 50% of new promotions, a substantial rise from the previous 30% standard.

The plan includes a package of 15 commitments aimed at addressing housing accessibility. Key measures involve accelerating residential land development, mobilizing municipal assets for affordable housing, and unblocking the urbanization of the former Fátima prison site. The council also intends to implement semi-annual monitoring of available land, licenses granted, and completed housing units.

Additionally, the plan seeks to regulate tourist apartments using objective criteria, reinforce rental assistance, and promote the rehabilitation of existing buildings to improve accessibility. The local government has also called upon the Spanish central government to provide a state framework for construction and financing, while urging the regional government to prioritize increasing affordable supply over declaring the entire municipality a high-pressure housing zone.
