Córdoba conservationists seek ban on wildlife traps

Conservationist groups, including Aves Argentinas, are calling on the Córdoba Legislature to debate a bill that would prohibit the use of animal traps. The initiative has achieved formal parliamentary status and is supported by more than 8,400 verified signatures from residents and specialists.

The proposed law seeks to ban the manufacture, sale, transport, advertising, and possession of trap cages used to capture native birds and other local animals. Proponents argue these devices are the starting point for illegal commercial circuits involving the clandestine pet trade. By restricting the availability of traps, the bill aims to prevent animals from being removed from their natural habitats.

Technical input for the bill was provided by environmental law specialists, field technicians, and academic institutions. While the project has been presented to the Environment Commission, legislative debate has been pending for approximately two months. Advocates emphasize that such captures pose sanitary risks due to close contact with wildlife and cause ongoing damage to provincial ecosystems.
