Córdoba court orders compensation for 1977 baby swap

A court in Córdoba, Argentina, has ordered the provincial state to pay significant compensation to three women following a baby swap that occurred 46 years ago. Judge Mariano Díaz Villasuso ruled that the province must pay between 25 and 30 million pesos, plus interest, to each of the affected parties.

The victims include two women who were raised by families other than their biological ones, and the mother who raised a child that was not biologically hers. The error occurred in 1977 at a provincial maternity ward due to negligence or error by hospital staff.

The truth was uncovered through an investigation initiated by one of the affected women via the National Commission for the Right to Identity (CONADI). DNA testing confirmed the lack of biological links to the families of upbringing and identified another woman born on the same day in the same facility, proving the exchange. The ruling noted that while the health center was part of the repressive circuit during the country's last civic-military dictatorship, the genetic evidence did not link the case to disappeared persons or the National Genetic Data Bank.
