Córdoba hosts II Iberian Congress of Oliviculture

The II Iberian Congress of Oliviculture has opened in Córdoba, Spain, focusing on the theme ‘Oliviculture in a context of global change: Innovation, Sustainability and Territory’. The event is co-organized by several institutions, including the Portuguese Association of Horticulture (APH), the Spanish Society of Horticultural Sciences (SECH), the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Andalusian Institute for Research and Training in Agricultural, Fisheries, Food and Ecological Production (IFAPA), and the University of Córdoba (UCO).

Andrés Lorite, the delegate for Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Agriculture for the province, noted that the congress places Córdoba at the center of the olive oil and olive technology world. He highlighted that olive groves are the predominant crop in the province, covering more than 376,000 hectares across all municipalities.

Data from 2025 indicates a strong presence of organic agriculture in the region. Of the 1,422,045 hectares of organic farmland in Andalusia, 258,408 hectares are located in Córdoba, making it the Andalusian province with the largest organic surface area. Within this, Córdoba accounts for more than 30% of Andalusia's organic olive groves, with 42,470 hectares. The province also features over 190 olive oil mills and four Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) classifications.
