Córdoba launches road safety campaign to combat traffic fatalities

The Municipality of Córdoba, in collaboration with the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and Vital Strategies, has launched a new annual road safety campaign titled ‘Controlar es cuidar’ (To control is to care). The initiative aims to address high fatality rates in the city, where data indicates one person dies every six days due to road incidents.

As part of the program, a workshop was held for local journalists and communicators to promote more responsible coverage. The training emphasized shifting terminology from ‘accidents’ to ‘preventable road incidents’ to better highlight causes and responsibilities. The workshop also provided tools for solution-oriented journalism, encouraging reporters to consult specialists in infrastructure, mobility, and public policy.

The campaign focuses on changing driver behavior and risk perception rather than traditional advertising. By utilizing scientific strategies, the city intends to use data-driven enforcement to protect citizens, specifically targeting speed as a primary factor in road fatalities.
