Córdoba LGBT+ community celebrates 50 years of nightlife and resistance

For over 50 years, the LGBT+ community in Córdoba, Argentina, has utilized various nightlife venues as essential spaces for sociability, artistic expression, and community building. These locations served as vital sanctuaries during periods of intense social and political hostility, including the military dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s.

Key historical venues include Akies, which operated in the San Vicente neighborhood between 1975 and 1985, providing a refuge during repressive years. Following the return to democracy, the scene expanded with the emergence of establishments such as Piaf Disco and Somos. In the 1990s, venues like Beep Pub and Hangar 18 furthered the artistic evolution of the community.

The local drag scene has also seen significant growth, moving from nightclubs into theaters and museums through the work of collectives like Tarde Marika Maricas and Dragmáticas. This cultural evolution has been influenced by both local developments and global trends, marking a transition from clandestine meetings to recognized cultural expressions.
