Córdoba medical teams perform pioneering minimally invasive pediatric surgery

Medical professionals in Córdoba, Argentina, have performed a pioneering minimally invasive procedure on a 2-year-old girl to resolve a complete biliary obstruction. The intervention, conducted jointly by teams from Hospital Córdoba and the Hospital de Niños de la Santísima Trinidad, utilized a tiny four-millimeter incision to restore bile flow to the intestine, successfully avoiding the need for high-risk open surgery.

The patient, who had previously received a liver transplant at six months old, had developed a complication where the surgical connection between the bile duct and the intestine (anastomosis) had completely closed. This obstruction caused severe infections known as cholangitis. To resolve the issue, specialists adapted a Rösch-Uchida device, originally designed for vascular procedures, to create a new pathway through the obstructed area.

This marks the first pediatric intervention of its kind performed in the province of Córdoba within both the public and private sectors. Following the successful procedure, the patient is recovering well in a general ward and is expected to be discharged soon.
