Córdoba, Mexico, sees rise in gender violence and femicides

In Córdoba, Mexico, gender-based violence and domestic abuse have reached critical levels. Data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System indicates that Córdoba ranks third in the state of Veracruz for domestic violence, recording 36 cases in January 2026 alone. The municipality is also among the top five in Veracruz for femicides and domestic abuse.

In January 2026, authorities recorded at least three reports of rape and 15 cases of domestic violence. The University Observatory of Violence against Women has documented two femicides during the current municipal administration.

Critics and victims have raised concerns regarding the efficacy of the Municipal Institute for Women. While the institute maintains a monthly payroll, it reportedly lacks a budget for prevention or victim assistance. Formal complaints have been filed with the Municipal Comptroller alleging professional negligence and failure to follow up on criminal proceedings, with victims describing the institutional response as “inefficient and precarious.”
