Córdoba to host Argentina's first paleogenomics laboratory

A scientific team in Córdoba, Argentina, has been awarded $645,000 by the Wellcome Foundation to establish the country’s first specialized laboratory for paleogenomics and bioanthropology. Led by researcher Rodrigo Nores from CONICET and the National University of Córdoba, the project is one of only 12 global initiatives selected for the Genomics in Context Awards.

The new infrastructure will enable high-resolution genomic studies to reconstruct the history of ancient populations. The initial phase of the project involves analyzing DNA from approximately 50 ancestors through more than 70 bone fragments and dental remains recovered from over 30 archaeological sites. This research aims to build upon previous findings that identified a specific genetic lineage in central Argentina dating back 8,500 years.

A central component of the initiative is the co-production of knowledge through intercultural dialogue. The research agenda is being developed in collaboration with the Council of Indigenous Peoples Communities of the Province of Córdoba, representing more than 20 communities. The team will work under the ethical supervision of the Comechingón, Sanavirón, and Ranquel peoples to ensure that scientific advancements respect the symbolic and identity-based value of the remains being studied.
