Córdoba, Veracruz faces rising crime rates despite security spending
Data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) indicates that Córdoba, Veracruz, continues to struggle with high crime rates despite significant municipal investment in security. Between January and September 2026, the municipality ranked fourth in the state for sexual offenses, recording 71 cases, including sexual abuse, harassment, and rape.
In terms of violence against women, Córdoba recorded 370 cases involving domestic, gender-based, and feminicide violence, placing it fourth in the state. Additionally, the municipality ranks third in the state for violent robberies against businesses, with 103 such incidents reported during the first eight months of 2026.
While Mayor Manuel Alonso Cerezo has allocated over 120 million pesos to public security, including 15.6 million pesos for leasing patrol vehicles, critics argue these measures have not yielded tangible results. Federal data contradicts official claims of a crime reduction, showing that violent robberies against businesses increased from 8 cases in May to 23 in July.
