Creatine supplementation and its effects on kidney and blood pressure health

Recent discussions regarding creatine supplementation highlight its impact on blood pressure and kidney function. Research published in the Journal of Hypertension suggests that for healthy individuals, creatine supplementation does not typically result in a significant increase in blood pressure.

Regarding renal health, nephrologist Dr. Bruno Biluca notes that while supplements are widely available, they are not suitable for everyone, particularly those with pre-existing kidney disease, those on dialysis, or transplant recipients. A warning from the National Kidney Foundation emphasizes that certain substances can accumulate if kidney function is already compromised.

Additionally, studies have shown that creatine use can lead to increased creatinine levels in the blood. However, experts clarify that this increase does not necessarily indicate a loss of kidney function or a decrease in the glomerular filtration rate, and medical results should be interpreted within the specific context of the patient.
