Creative Assembly withdraws Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from Steam

Creative Assembly has withdrawn the Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from Steam just two days after its release. The decision follows a wave of negative user reviews, with the title reaching an 82% negative rating on the platform.

Users reported significant issues, including performance degradation compared to the original version, visual inconsistencies, and new bugs. A major point of contention was the use of AI-upscaled assets and unit cards, which the community criticized as an unacceptable shortcut for an enhanced edition.

Roger Collum, Vice President of Total War, issued a statement explaining that the Complete Edition was not developed directly by Creative Assembly, but by an external studio named METABOO. He admitted that the project did not undergo the studio’s standard internal quality control processes because the primary teams were focused on other major projects. While acknowledging the error in oversight, Collum stated that the studio takes responsibility as the franchise owner.
