Credem ATM blast in Varapodio, Italy linked to recent Piana di Gioia Tauro robberies

An explosive device detonated at the Credem bank ATM in Varapodio, Italy, using the “marmotta” technique that involves inserting a charge into the machine. The blast caused significant damage to the ATM and parts of the bank premises, waking residents and prompting an emergency response from fire crews and local carabinieri.

Police have notified the Palmi prosecutor’s office and are reviewing surveillance footage from the bank and nearby cameras. Like a similar attack in Rizziconi a few days earlier, three‑point spikes were found on the road to hinder police vehicles, suggesting a possible connection between the two incidents and indicating the involvement of an organized criminal group, possibly from outside the region.
