Credit card debt management and repayment regulations

Managing credit card debt involves understanding the distinction between early installment payments and principal prepayments. Applying extra funds directly to the outstanding principal reduces the base for future interest calculations, whereas simply paying installments ahead of schedule maintains the original interest and fees.

In Peru, consumer protection laws and SBS regulations grant individuals the right to make total or partial prepayments without facing penalties, commissions, or additional fees. Financial institutions are required to reduce compensatory interest generated up to the payment date in these instances.

Failure to meet credit card obligations leads to various financial consequences, including moratory interest, additional charges, and damage to credit history. While paying only the minimum amount keeps an account current, it increases the total cost of financing due to ongoing interest on the remaining balance. Paying less than the minimum can result in an overdue status. Although non-payment can lead to judicial procedures or debt collection efforts, civil debt does not result in imprisonment under certain legal frameworks, such as the Mexican Constitution.
