Credit card reward programs see shifts in hotel point transfers

The landscape of transferable credit card points for hotel redemptions has undergone significant changes. While programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and Amex Membership Rewards offer high flexibility, redeeming them for lodging can be more complex than for flights due to a disparity in hotel transfer partners.

Recent shifts include Wells Fargo adding Wyndham Rewards as a 1:2 transfer partner and American Express adding Leading Hotels of the World at a 4:1 ratio. Conversely, Citi reduced transfer ratios for Preferred Hotels’ I Prefer and Choice Privileges. Chase has also implemented new requirements, such as necessitating a $795/year card for 1:1 transfers to World of Hyatt.

American Express also offers the ‘Pay with Points’ feature, which allows members to redeem Membership Rewards directly through the American Express Travel portal for flights or hotels. This method provides simplicity by avoiding the need to manage airline or hotel loyalty programs or search for award availability, though it may not always offer the highest redemption value compared to direct transfers.
