Credit Information Bureau warns of viral messages regarding ‘STOP Kredīts’
The Credit Information Bureau (KIB) has issued a warning regarding viral messages circulating on social media and communication platforms. These messages, which reference a recent cyberattack on the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), urge citizens to activate the ‘STOP Kredīts’ feature on the KIB website to protect themselves from fraudulent credit obligations.
While KIB clarifies that it did not author these messages, it notes that the core recommendation to use ‘STOP Kredīts’ is valid. The ‘STOP Kredīts’ feature allows individuals and businesses to signal within the KIB system that they do not wish to take on new credit liabilities, such as consumer loans, mortgages, or leasing.
However, KIB Executive Director Intars Miķelsons warns that such widespread messages can be exploited by scammers who may replace legitimate links with fraudulent ones. To ensure security, KIB advises the public not to click on links provided in forwarded messages. Instead, users should manually type ‘kib.lv’ into their web browser to access the service safely via the ‘Mana kredītvēsture’ section.
