Credit trends show rising informal and delinquent debt in Dominican Republic and Argentina
In the Dominican Republic, the Superintendencia de Bancos reported that approximately 28.3% of new credit cards issued over the last 12 months were granted to individuals without formal income registered in the Social Security Treasury (TSS). This represents 197,040 new credit facilities. The largest segment of new credits was concentrated among users with monthly formal incomes between RD$12,501 and RD$32,500, accounting for 34.6% of total cards granted.
In Argentina, reports from the group Libres del Sur indicate a significant rise in delinquency, with 5.6 million people now more than 90 days late on loan or credit card payments. In the province of La Rioja, over 70,000 people are in arrears, representing 23% of registered debtors. Notably, more than 45,000 individuals in La Rioja are classified as uncollectible debtors. Analysts attribute this trend to a recessionary macroeconomic context and a decline in formal employment.
