Cremers challenges Senate candidate's use of medical title

The Regional Medical Council of Rio Grande do Sul (Cremers) has taken legal action against Senate candidate Ricardo Herbert Jones, also known as Ric Jones, regarding his professional designation. Cremers petitioned the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RS) and the Electoral Public Ministry (MPE-RS) to prevent Jones from using the occupation of “doctor” in his electoral registration and campaign materials.

According to Cremers, Jones had his medical license revoked on November 22, 2016, following ethical and technical violations. The revocation was linked to an incident involving a childbirth performed under inadequate conditions, which significantly contributed to the patient's death. The council emphasized that holding a medical degree is insufficient for legal practice without active professional registration.

Jones is running for the Senate representing the PCO. His candidacy status is currently listed as “awaiting judgment” in electoral records. Cremers stated that the legal action is intended to defend the legal practice of medicine and protect the public rather than influence the election.
