Cremona agricultural electricity consumption rises sharply

Data from Terna reveals a significant rise in electricity consumption within the agricultural sector in the province of Cremona, Italy, which has seen a 19.39% increase. This trend contrasts with the domestic sector, which has seen a 2.77% reduction in consumption since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The surge is attributed to the high energy demands of intensive livestock farming and the biogas industry. Modern automated stables in the region require continuous power for robotic milking systems, forced ventilation, and automated feeding and cleaning systems.

Additionally, while Cremona is a major hub for biogas production, the internal processes of these plants—such as operating large digestor mixers, loading pumps, and managing digestate separation—require substantial electrical input. The high density of livestock and the large amount of land dedicated to energy crops contribute to this intensive energy profile.
