Crescent Island wildlife faces ecosystem imbalance after isolation
Since 2020, Crescent Island in Kenya has become a closed ecosystem due to rising water levels in Lake Naivasha. The rising water submerged the isthmus that previously connected the land to the mainland, effectively transforming the peninsula into an isolated island.
While the absence of large predators like lions or hyenas might appear to create a paradise for herbivores such as wildebeest and giraffes, researchers from St. George's University suggest the reality is more complex. The lack of natural predators has led to a continuous and excessive grazing pressure from the resident herbivore populations. Because these animals can no longer migrate to different areas, the finite resources and limited space of the island are under significant strain, threatening the long-term ecological balance.
