Cretaquarium and pink sand beaches highlight Crete tourism
Crete, Greece's largest island, offers diverse attractions ranging from unique natural landscapes to marine life exhibits. The Cretaquarium, located approximately 14 kilometers from Heraklion, is open 365 days a year. Seasonal hours vary, with winter operations running from 9:30 to 16:00 and summer hours from 9:30 to 19:00.
Admission prices at the aquarium include 15 Euro for general entry, 8 Euro for children aged 5 to 17 and seniors, and free entry for children under 5 and individuals with disabilities. Group rates for 20 or more people are set at 10 Euro per person.
The island is also famous for its pink-colored sands at beaches such as Elafonissi and Balos. This distinct coloration is caused by Foraminifera, tiny marine single-celled organisms that form calcium shells. The remains of these organisms and broken shells create the pink hue visible in coastal areas. Recent reports have highlighted concerns regarding the illegal sale of this sand as souvenirs online.
