Crete migrant transfers to North Aegean islands underway
The Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum has initiated the temporary transfer of migrants from Crete to the North Aegean islands, including Samos and Lesvos. Officials state these movements are conducted in an ‘absolutely proportional manner’ to facilitate essential identification, screening, and border control procedures. The Ministry emphasized that these transfers are intended to be temporary and will not increase the burden on island facilities, noting that the number of people being moved to the islands is significantly lower than the number of migrants being transferred from the islands to mainland facilities to alleviate overcrowding.
In separate developments, maritime authorities and Frontex reported a surge in arrivals south of Crete, rescuing approximately 181 migrants in consecutive operations. Most of those intercepted were young men from countries including Bangladesh, Somalia, and Afghanistan. Additionally, law enforcement in Crete arrested three South Sudanese nationals suspected of human smuggling following the discovery of several groups of migrants on various beaches.
On the islands, authorities noted that facility occupancy in Samos and Lesvos is at a historic low, with thousands of migrants having already been moved to mainland structures during 2026.
