Crete advances space technology hub and university infrastructure projects

The University of Crete has confirmed plans to proceed with the construction of a new large-scale amphitheater as part of the SDIT project. The new facility, designed as a modern cultural and scientific center, will have a capacity of approximately 800 people and a surface area of 5,639 square meters. It is intended to host academic ceremonies, international conferences, and performing arts such as opera and theater, featuring modern infrastructure including recording studios and translation booths.

Simultaneously, the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) has launched the ‘Space-Crete’ initiative, aiming to establish Crete as a European hub for the space economy. This strategic partnership involves the creation of the Crete Center of Excellence in Emerging Space Technologies (CCEST). The project has a total budget of 35 million euros over six years, funded by 15 million euros from the European Commission and 20 million euros from the Greek state and private entities. The initiative seeks to capitalize on emerging space technology markets to provide significant economic and scientific benefits to the region.
