Crete building inspections continue after severe weather damage
Authorities in Crete are conducting inspections to assess damage caused by recent severe weather. As of October 8, 2026, the General Directorate for the Recovery of the Effects of Natural Disasters has inspected 137 buildings across five municipalities, including Ierapetra, Heraklion, Mylopotamos, Amari, and Lasithi Plateau.
Of the inspected structures—which include 75 residences, 36 commercial spaces, and 26 other buildings such as warehouses and stables—127 have been classified as ‘green’ (safe), 10 as ‘yellow’ (cautionary), and none as ‘red’ (unsafe). The highest number of inspections occurred in the Ierapetra municipality, with 66 total assessments.
Local political groups, such as ‘Laiki Sysepirsi’, have criticized the lack of adequate flood and disaster prevention infrastructure on the island, calling for more robust protection measures following the loss of life and significant property damage during the storms.
