Crete disaster relief: 100% compensation for homes and 70% for businesses

The Greek government has announced an emergency aid package for residents and businesses in Crete following severe weather damage. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis stated that state aid for damaged homes will cover 100% of assessed losses, with payments expected within 10 to 15 days of a completed application from local municipalities. For businesses, compensation will cover 70% of estimated damages.

In addition to direct financial aid, the government is implementing measures to suspend tax and insurance obligations, as well as foreclosure auctions. The Hellenic Banking Association (EET) has also announced support measures, including the suspension of loan installment payments for individuals and businesses in affected areas until December 31, 2026, and a suspension of judicial and extrajudicial collection processes until February 28, 2027.

Authorities have begun field inspections to assess structural damage. Officials from the General Secretariat for the Recovery of Natural Disasters are working with local municipalities to categorize buildings as green, yellow, or red based on their safety and damage levels. The primary focus remains on the protection of human life and the rapid restoration of essential infrastructure.
