Crete emerges as top Greek tourism destination in 2026 as visitor spending drops

In the first four months of 2026 Crete recorded a 16.8% increase in international arrivals, with the airport of Chania showing a 28% rise. Despite the surge in visitors, average spending per tourist fell sharply from about €980 in 2023 to €690 in 2025, translating into an estimated loss of €1 billion for the local economy. Crete’s growth highlights a broader shift in Greek tourism, where higher visitor numbers do not automatically boost regional incomes due to the rise of short‑term rentals and all‑inclusive packages.

Athens continued to attract travelers, posting a 7.1% rise in international arrivals and surpassing two million visitors in the same period. The capital’s appeal is supported by a range of public swimming facilities that cater to tourists seeking leisure in the city. Popular pools such as Acqua e Sole in Alimos (prices from €11 on weekdays), Halandri Club (from €15 weekdays), and the rooftop pool at St. George Lycabettus (up to €90 on weekends) are highlighted as affordable options for visitors. These amenities illustrate how urban attractions complement Greece’s traditional sun‑and‑sea offerings.
