Crete energy investments face regulatory risks
Energy market experts warn that Crete risks losing significant investments in energy storage batteries due to the current regulatory framework. While 200 MW of storage capacity is planned for the island to support solar and wind energy, existing rules may exclude projects that require new connection infrastructure.
Because available substations and connection points are limited in Crete, there is a danger that a large portion of the planned capacity will remain unutilized. Market participants suggest that the Ministry of Environment and Energy should allow the evaluation of projects requiring new infrastructure, provided they meet technical requirements, and prioritize island investments without needing to alter the overall 4,700 MW allocation.
