Crete experiences extreme rainfall with over 360 mm in Anogeia

Extreme rainfall has struck Crete, with measurements in Anogeia, Rethymno, exceeding 361.4 mm within a two-day period from Wednesday, September 30, to Thursday, October 1, 2026. According to the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), the intense precipitation was most concentrated in mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, while coastal areas in Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion saw relatively lower levels.

Kostas Lagouvardos, head of the METEO unit, noted that while conditions were expected to subside temporarily between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon, a new wave of heavy rain and storms is forecasted from Friday night through Sunday morning. Experts warn that because the soil is already saturated and torrents are full, the upcoming weather could exacerbate existing problems and create new risks, necessitating increased vigilance.
