Crete faces surge in labor rights and workplace violence complaints

Crete is facing a surge in labor rights complaints, with reports of workplace violence, harassment, and precarious employment conditions within its tourism sector. According to the 2025 Annual Report from the Independent Labour Inspection Authority, Crete recorded 15.39 complaints per 1,000 employees regarding violence and harassment, a rate approximately 13 times higher than the Greek national average of 1.19 per 1,000.

The Heraklion Hotel Employees Union has highlighted several systemic issues, including unpaid Easter bonuses, the use of uninsured workers, and the manipulation of working hours. Workers have also reported psychological and verbal abuse, which accounts for 79% of recorded incidents nationwide.

Additional concerns involve the use of short-term “20-day contracts” that keep staff in a state of constant uncertainty, as well as discrepancies in the implementation of the Digital Work Card. Experts suggest the high volume of complaints may reflect both the seasonal nature of the tourism and hospitality industries and an increasing willingness among workers to report misconduct to authorities.
