Crete farmers face uncertainty ahead of olive harvest
Farmers in Crete are facing significant uncertainty as the new olive oil harvest season approaches. Producers are currently struggling with technical issues regarding OADE declarations, specifically involving a new platform, land parcel data discrepancies, and integration with the Land Registry.
These administrative delays have pushed the expected disbursement of agricultural subsidies past October, creating financial strain for growers. This occurs as the cost of production remains high due to expenses for labor, transportation, olive mills, and fuel. Additionally, finding sufficient workers for the harvest remains a challenge in many areas.
Market uncertainty also persists, with initial estimates for extra virgin olive oil prices in Crete ranging between 3.80 and 4.20 euros per kilogram. Farmers are attempting to manage high operational costs and financial obligations while facing delays in essential government support.
