Crete Festival 2026 celebrates female cultural heritage through music

The Region of Crete is presenting a series of musical performances as part of the ‘Women: Cultural Heritage. Creation’ parallel action for the Crete Festival 2026. These events aim to highlight female creativity and cultural memory.

One performance, ‘The Thread of Florentini’, is a musical tribute to Florentini Skouloudi-Kaloutsi (1890–1971). A native of Rethymno, she was a significant figure in reviving Cretan weaving by blending folk art with Minoan patterns. The show, held at the Mikis Theodorakis Theatre in Chania, utilizes music, poetry, and video to depict her life and legacy.

Another production, ‘Sonetti d’Amore’ (Songs of Love), explores the female experience through poetry and music. Drawing on works by William Shakespeare, Lorca, and Neruda, and engaging in dialogue with female poets from Sappho to Matsi Hadzilazarou, the performance features lyrical voices and piano. It is scheduled for presentations in Rethymno and Sitia. These activities are held under the auspices of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture, and the General Secretariat for Equality and Human Rights.
