Crete flood protection: KKE requests EU funding for infrastructure
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has submitted a formal inquiry to the European Commission regarding the devastating impact of floods in Crete. MEP Kostas Papadakis highlighted the severe consequences of inadequate flood protection planning, noting that an 80-year-old livestock farmer lost his life and hundreds of others were endangered during recent flooding.
The inquiry details extensive damage to road networks, agricultural land, and residential infrastructure. It also points to ongoing issues in the region, including residents still awaiting compensation from previous fires and floods in areas such as Agios Vasileios, Ierapetra, and Platanias.
The KKE criticizes the Greek government and local authorities for prioritizing private investment and fast-track procedures for businesses while essential flood, fire, and earthquake protection projects remain stalled or unaddressed.
