Crete forest mapping disputes cause legal uncertainty

Greek lawmaker Eleni Vatsina has submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of Environment and Energy regarding unresolved issues with forest maps in Heraklion and across Crete. The lawmaker highlights that despite the publication and ratification of these maps years ago, citizens continue to face uncertainty regarding property ownership status, which hinders the use of their land.

These administrative delays are also reportedly impacting the livestock sector by creating obstacles to accessing and legally utilizing grazing lands. Vatsina is calling for a clear timeline for resolution, more transparency, and adequate staffing for the relevant forestry services to address pending objections and ensure land registry records are updated automatically following official decisions.
