Crete health authorities investigate gastroenteritis outbreak

Health authorities in Crete are conducting an epidemiological investigation following a surge in gastroenteritis cases, with 93 total cases reported across the region. A significant cluster has been identified in Rethymno, where approximately 30 individuals have sought treatment at the local hospital since late September, though officials believe the actual number of infections may be higher as many patients remain at home with mild symptoms.

Investigators are examining several potential causes, including a possible viral infection and the impact of recent heavy flooding on the island's water supply. While authorities have ordered widespread water sampling across all four prefectures of Crete to ensure safety, preliminary laboratory results for stool and viral tests have so far been negative. Some reports indicate that water quality tests conducted by local agencies have found the water to be safe, suggesting the flooding may not have compromised the networks in the Rethymno municipality.

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) is actively involved in the investigation, utilizing specialized questionnaires to map patient movements and common exposure factors. Most patients have reported symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, with most cases resolving within 24 to 48 hours. No serious health risks or hospitalizations requiring intensive care have been reported among adults.
