Crete hit by most extreme weather in 25 years
Crete has experienced its most extreme weather event in 25 years, with rainfall levels surpassing the catastrophic storms of February 2019. According to METEO of the National Observatory of Athens, the recent five-day period of continuous heavy rain has caused widespread destruction across the island.
Significant damage has been reported in the Lasithi Plateau, where up to 440mm of rain fell in two days, turning fields into a 25-square-kilometer lake and burying agricultural production under mud. Other heavily impacted areas include Mylopotamos, Zoniana, and Gouves. The storm has caused one death, extensive landslides, and severe damage to roads, water networks, and homes. The agricultural and tourism sectors have also suffered major blows.
The Greek government is responding to the crisis. A government committee is meeting to discuss relief measures, including the potential suspension of tax obligations and auctions for affected citizens. Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Konstantinos Katsafados, stated that local authorities have 15 days to submit requests for infrastructure restoration and project funding.
