Crete Inaugurates First 'Road of Cretan Diaspora' in Agios Nikolaos

On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, the municipality of Agios Nikolaos in Crete opened the island’s first “Road of Cretan Diaspora.” The ceremony began at 19:30 on a pedestrian street near Walt Disney Road and continued at the Lake of Agios Nikolaos where the new road was formally dedicated.

World Council of Cretans president Nikos Kastrinakis highlighted the symbolic importance of the road and the planting of an olive tree as a lasting link between the island and its global diaspora. Local officials, including Mayor Manolis Meningakis, and community members honored the contributions of Cretans abroad, notably awarding Socrates Tsourd alakis for his lifelong work promoting Cretan identity beyond the island.

The event underscores the ongoing cultural ties between Crete and its expatriate community and serves as a permanent tribute to the diaspora’s role in preserving and promoting Cretan heritage worldwide.
