Crete intensifies livestock inspections for agricultural subsidies

Authorities in Crete have intensified inspections of agricultural and livestock holdings to verify eligibility for subsidies. These checks have moved beyond paper audits to include on-site inspections of livestock numbers, identification data, and actual animal capital.

In Mylopotamos, a recent mass inspection included a sample of 195 livestock farmers, with 75 undergoing the process. In Viannos, discrepancies were noted when a farm declared 218 sheep and goats but the animals were not found on-site; however, an unattended flock of 105 animals was discovered in the area, some of which reportedly belonged to the individuals under inspection.

The inspection methodology is shifting toward a more integrated system. Authorities are now utilizing risk analysis and cross-referencing data from various sources, including production records, tax data, and land registries. Additionally, a new digital database is being implemented to ensure more accurate recording and monitoring of livestock in connection with the agricultural subsidy system.
