Crete experiences multiple migrant rescue operations
A series of intense migration waves has been recorded in the maritime areas south of Crete, involving multiple rescue operations over a short period. In one wave of four consecutive incidents, approximately 158 migrants were identified, including at least 14 minors. These individuals, originating from countries such as Sudan, Bangladesh, and Egypt, were located both at sea and disembarking on shores like Makria Ammo.
Other recent operations involved the rescue of approximately 97 migrants in two successive missions near Kaloi Limenes, coordinated by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (EKSEΔ) with Frontex aerial support. Additional groups of 25 and 51 people were spotted south of Gavdos and transported to Paleochora.
The continuous influx has placed significant pressure on local authorities and services in Crete, prompting ongoing discussions regarding the establishment of new hospitality structures to manage the arrivals.
