Crete mourns firefighter Pantelis Diamantaki killed in Amari blaze

On 29 July 2024, 25‑year‑old seasonal firefighter Pantelis Diamantaki died while battling a major fire in the Amari area of southern Rethymno, Crete. He was swept away on the fire line alongside 58‑year‑old colleague Emmanuel (Manolis) Stratidaki.

A funeral procession was held at the Holy Temple of Saint Nektarios in Furfouros Amari. Archbishop Eugenios of Crete led the service, and local officials—including regional governor Stavros Arnaoutakis, deputy governor Maria Lioni, former civil‑protection minister Giannis Kefalogiannis, and the mayors of Agios Vasileios and Mylopotamos—paid tribute. The community gathered, laying flowers and expressing grief for the two fallen firefighters.

Later that afternoon a second service was scheduled for Stratidaki at the Temple of the Annunciation in Gerakari Amari. The ceremonies highlighted the sacrifice of fire‑service personnel and called for continued support for civil‑protection efforts in the region.
